Avant d'être un groupe scénique Massilia Sound System, comme son nom l'indique est un sound system dans sa définition jamaïcaine : une sono, des platines pour jouer des disques de reggae et des DJs / Toasters (tchatcheurs) qui ambiancent la soirée et chantent leurs textes sur les versions instrumentales des disques. À ses débuts Massilia Sound System est un collectif, changeant au gré des interventions, regroupé autour de Prince Tatou (alias Moussu T) qui en est le concepteur et, tout à la fois, sélecta (celui qui choisit les disques), chanteur et sonorisateur.
