Alors qu’il vient de terminer ses études, Dorante revient à Paris, bien résolu à profiter des plaisirs de la capitale. En compagnie de son valet, il rencontre deux jeunes coquettes aux Tuileries et s’invente une carrière militaire pour les éblouir. S’ensuit un imbroglio diabolique mêlant : jeunes femmes, père et ami. Faisant fi de l’honneur, des serments d’amitié et d’amour, Dorante s’enferre dans un engrenage de mensonges qui déclenche d’irrésistibles quiproquos. Ce chef d’œuvre en alexandrins ramène sur la scène le joyeux et brillant Corneille, sublimé par une mise en scène originale et des costumes d'époque
